Chiropractic Care for Anxiety and Depression

Most people know that visiting a chiropractic clinic can help ease neck and spinal pain, however, many people don't realize that seeing a chiropractor can help ease the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Anti-anxiety and antidepressant medications are often prescribed to treat these disorders, however, they can cause serious side effects. Anti-anxiety medications are usually only prescribed for short-term use because they can cause dependence and severe withdrawal symptoms. Here are some ways chiropractors can help treat anxiety and depression.

Acupressure

Acupressure is a safe way to reduce stress and anxiety. It can also help boost the mood in those who are depressed. Acupressure relieves muscle tension and helps enhance circulation to the brain. Increased circulation helps the blood transport more oxygen and nutrients to your heart, brain, and other internal organs to keep them healthy.  Acupressure is very relaxing and may help improve the quality of your sleep.

It is thought that poor sleep habits may play an import role in the development of mood disorders including anxiety and depression. Acupressure also helps relieve pain which may be another risk factor in the development of mood disorders. Your chiropractor may be able to perform acupressure therapy or the chiropractic clinic may have an acupressurist on staff.

Deep Tissue Massage

Another effective treatment option for anxiety and depression is chiropractic deep tissue massage. It is very effective in relieving muscle pain and it also helps the brain release certain chemicals into the bloodstream such as endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine. These chemicals are sometimes called "happy hormones" and when they are released into the bloodstream through massage or otherwise, the symptoms of anxiety and depression improve.

Like acupressure, deep tissue massage helps enhance quality sleep patterns so that you can get a restful night's sleep and wake up with more energy and a brighter outlook on life. Before your chiropractic massage appointment, be sure to tell the doctor if you have any degenerative spinal disorders, kidney problems, neurological diseases, or arthritic conditions. These health conditions will probably not disqualify you from getting a deep tissue massage, but when your chiropractor knows as much as possible about your medical history, he or she can better individualize your treatment program.

If you suffer from anxiety or depression, make an appointment at a chiropractic clinic. After an examination that will include a comprehensive spinal assessment, he or she will recommend a treatment plan to help manage your symptoms.
